b. 1983
Heather engages with abstraction as a form of mindfulness practice. Her meditative approach sets the stage for discovery, play, and surprise. As she works, she gives herself permission to adjust and repurpose pieces as they take shape—often tearing previous drawings to pieces to give them new life in the form of textured collage. Her process allows for creative shifts—taking what works and reconfiguring or reimagining components to resolve compositions. Heather finds that the connections between a completed work and the percolating thoughts that influenced its evolution can only be made in hindsight. Each piece unfolds instinctually and the titles for her works are often inspired by spirituality, pop culture, music, media and literature. Heather is drawn to nostalgia and her reference material helps her make connections between memories or points of emotional resonance that influence her work.
Heather graduated from the University of Utah in 2005 with a BFA in Painting and Drawing and earned her MFA in Painting from Northern Illinois University in 2012. Professionally, she has worked as an Art Consultant, Adjunct Professor, and Marketing Coordinator/Curator. She currently lives and works in the Chicago area.
